Ten to watch at Sonisphere 2011…

Posted in News on June 22, 2011 by MetalThrashingMad
10: Bill Bailey
Given the somewhat dubious honour of closing the Saturn stage before Slipknot make their return on the Apollo (in past years the majority of the crowd have flocked to the front of the larger stage well before the subheadliners have finished), Mr. Bailey will nonetheless be making his music festival headline debut, pulling out all the stops to impress. Blending spoken word with his own unique musical brand, he’s sure to raise a few giggles and a sertainty to help the crowd begin to wind down after a hectic weekend.
9: Orange Goblin
Well into their 15th Anniversary tour, Orange Goblin have impressed throughout the earlier part of this year with a spate of bludgeoning celebratory performances. They don’t do things complex, they don’t do things fancy but anyone who’s had the pleasure of  listening to the records or catching them live at any point of their storied career will tell you that they do things right. They’ll have a mission getting a crowd before The Knot obliterate the main stage but anyone who makes it down will surely be in for a treat.
8: Cavalera Conspiracy
Max and Igor, back together…again. Sure, some of the initial sheen will have worn off for Cavalera Conspiracy but anyone who’s ever called themselves a fan of Sepultura or Soulfly knows that Brazilian metal sounds best a little scuffed-up. The latter of those smashed the Saturn stage to bits last year and the step up to Apollo will be sure to herald even more widespread chaos this time round.
7: Limp Bizkit
Limp Bizkit were once, about a decade ago, the biggest band in the world. Understandably, their 2009 comeback shows – chock full of dancefloor matured hits – were cause for a hell of a celebration but this time round they’re back to truly prove themselves. New album Gold Cobra lies just around the corner and while the tried classics will undoubtedly roll out, the newer tunes will be judged in the harsh light of day. Can they keep the bounce in the mosh pit?
6: Watain
Following a brutal UK tour earlier this year, no one’s really got a fucking clue what Watain will roll out for Sonisphere but it’s sure not gonna be pretty. Spring’s club shows saw blood, blades and dismembered animal carcasses kicking around the country’s smaller venues; it’ll be fascinating to see if they’ve got the balls to bring something really horrible to disgust the more mainstream masses.
5: In Flames
To refer to Niclas Engelin as the ‘new’ guitarist for In Flames may be somewhat misleading – he’s been in and out of the band on no less than five seperate occasions – but it’ll be fascinating to see whether the current lineup lives up to the promised cohesion. New album Sounds Of A Playground Fading may not have the outright bombast of Whoracle or Clayman but when the Swedes’ guitars let rip over Knebworth, there’ll be few to match their might…
4: Slayer
Metallica may be nominal headliners of the Big 4 but there’s little question that Slayer are the spiritual masters of the group. Unflinching in their pursuit of serrated, bloodthirsty musical perfection for almost 30 years now, Araya and King proved last year that they’ve still got the teeth to do damage on the grandest stages and even a man down (Hanneman remains absent with fucking Necrotising Fascitis! Gary Holt will more than capably fill in!), the challenge of their closest contemporaries can only bring out their best.
3: Biffy Clyro
Biffy have been building quickly towards superstardom since the release of Only Revolutions and though the chorus of naysayers would happily deny them headline status just yet (“They’re not ready!” “They sold out to X Factor!”), the Sonisphere promoters have decided to have a punt. Whether their stadia-baiting potential will be fulfilled has to be seen – and standing beside subheadliners Weezer will be a true test of their mettle – but there’s sure to be a touch of triumph about this performance regardless.
2: Gallows
Following last year’s chaotic, festival-owning show Gallows are back, bumped out of the marquee and threatening real chaos. Last time we had circle tents in and out of the tent, crowdsurfing wheelchairs and Frank Carter doing the front crawl over the audience. This time there won’t be a roof to blow off but – easily Britain’s best live band -  you wouldn’t bet against them bringing the sky down anyway.
1: Slipknot
Brothers reunited, last week’s show in Greece featured original boiler suits and masks. The setlist for their headline performance in Germany was rock-solid brilliance. Emotions are sure to be running high as they celebrate and mourn Paul Gray. No-one’s sure what, if anything, the future holds for Slipknot but, as a moment, this festival-closing set promises to be one for the ages.

Remembering Lost Comrades

Posted in News on October 12, 2010 by MetalThrashingMad

The site has been a little inactive recently, but as we’re getting back to business it’s appropriate that we remember two underrated rock heroes who’ve left us in the past couple of weeks.

Trev Fleming, guitarist with Sweet Savage for the past thirty years and personal friend of this writer passed away on 2 October 2010 following a long illness. A great guitarist and wonderful character, he will be sorely missed by all who knew him and his music. Excellent upcoming Sweet Savage record “Regenerator” will be a fitting musical memorial to a great guy.

The official release from Trev’s bandmates is attached below.

“It is with great sadness we have to report the passing of Trevor, our beloved friend and musician.

“He has not been well for the whole year and passed away early on Saturday 2nd October.

“This was very sudden and we are shocked and extremely saddened with his departure.

Trevor was the lifeblood of the band both in terms of musicianship and crack. He was funny, charming, extremely clever and deep, an unique individual who had many talents. Trevor could make anyone laugh, could write the catchiest riffs and lyrics; in fact, everything about Big T was totally infectious.

“He will be sorely missed by us all.

“God bless you, my friend!”

Current DEF LEPPARD guitarist Vivian Campbell, who was a member of SWEET SAVAGE from 1979 until 1982 (when he joined DIO), commented: “There’s been so much death over the last year or so it’s difficult to make sense of it. Our parents are of an older generation, so as difficult as it is to lose them, at least it fits with the natural order. When our friends start to die, it becomes more difficult to reconcile.

Trevor Fleming was a founding member of SWEET SAVAGE and although it seems like a lifetime ago since he and I first met, he was much too young to die. He was a good man and he will be very missed by me and by all who knew him.”

Further from home, Gotthard frontman Steve Lee was killed when a tractor-trailer skidded into his parked motorcycle on a rainy Nevada highway northeast of Las Vegas on Tuesday 5 October 2010. The singer for one of Switzerland’s largest bands, it’s a real shame to see the loss of another great rock frontman this year, long before his time.

GOTTHARD‘s record label, Nuclear Blast Records, has released the following statement regarding the passing of the band’s singer, Steve Lee:

“The world has lost one of its greatest rock singers: GOTTHARD frontman Steve Lee was killed accidentally during a motorcycle trip in the USA on Interstate 15 between Mesquite and Las Vegas and died at the scene.

“The GOTTHARD singer had flown to the U.S. with some biker friends just this weekend to fulfil a long-cherished dream for which he’d never had the time due to his heavy touring schedule for many years. It was to be two weeks through the States on a Harley-Davidson.

“The 21 Swiss bikers started their journey on Sunday on a total of 12 motorcycles. On Tuesday, October 5, about 50 miles from Las Vegas, the group had stopped at the roadside to put on their rain gear as it had started to rain. On the slippery road, the trailer of a passing truck began to skid. The driver attempted evasive action but his trailer clipped five of the motorcycles parked at the roadside; one of them hit Steve Lee. Rescue services attempted resuscitation but efforts were stopped after 20 minutes. At 16:13 local time, Steve Lee was pronounced dead.

“Among the passengers were GOTTHARD bassist Marc Lynn and Lee‘s girlfriend Brigitte Voss Balzarini.

“All other fellow riders were unharmed.

Steve Lee was 48 years old.

“With Steve Lee, we not only lose one of the world’s best rock voices but also an extraordinary personality.

“Despite his enormous success, the Ticino singer had retained a very subtle eye for detail and often impressed the people around him with his sensitive observation. Due to his personality, he had a serious outlook, without losing his sense of humour and lust for life.

Steve Lee met his environment with respect but always had, in his gentle way, a very simple, personal touch. He understood like no one else how to enjoy without going too far — to him, alcohol and parties were things he met with level-headedness.

“The singer sold several million albums throughout his career with GOTTHARD, several of them reaching platinum, double or triple platinum status. And yet all this bears no relation to the human greatness of Steve Lee on a daily basis.”

COREY TAYLOR ‘Conflicted’ About Continuing SLIPKNOT

Posted in News on September 5, 2010 by MetalThrashingMad

SLIPKNOT frontman Corey Taylor says he doesn’t want to make any rash statements about the band’s future following the recent passing of bassist Paul Gray and is focusing, for the time being, on promoting “Audio Secrecy”, the new album from his other band, STONE SOUR.

“It’s kind of a gray area right now,” Taylor tells in FMQB Productions‘ radio special, “Inside Stone Sour: Audio Secrecy”. “Everybody is still feeling it. It’s too soon to tell.

“I’m very conflicted about whether or not I want to do anything with SLIPKNOT, because to me, Paul was such an integral part of the band. He was the whole reason that the band was the way it was… Paul was the glue and the orchestrator behind some of the best music we ever wrote. He was the soul of the band.

“I don’t want to make any statements that I’ll look like a fool in retrospect, but to me, right now, it just doesn’t make sense,” Taylor says. “Until it does, that’s the way it stays for me. That’s why I’ve been saying it’s too soon to tell… you never know.”

“Inside Stone Sour: Audio Secrecy” is airing on radio stations nationwide from September 3 to September 7.

SLIPKNOT drummer Joey Jordison, who was recently out with ROB ZOMBIE on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, told The Pulse of Radio that there have actually been talks about SLIPKNOT‘s future following Gray‘s passing. “Shawn (Crahan) just came out, the ‘Clown,’ he just came out to the Mayhem festival, and we sat down and we talked and we’re starting to map out the game plan right now,” he said. “So there is another SLIPKNOT record already kinda in the making. You know, we’re getting timelines set and, you know, it’s gonna be a little bit but there’s definitely another record. Paul would always want us to make another record. He wouldn’t want the band to stop — SLIPKNOT was his life.”

Paul Gray‘s body was found on May 24 in a hotel room in a Des Moines, Iowa suburb. A coroner ruled that the 38-year-old musician died of an accidental overdose of morphine.
